Carving Runes or symbols into trees were declared as sacred spaces, often called “Buchenhaine” or “Eichenhaine” in German, depending on the type of tree. The rich and lush hardwood forests of Central Europe developed more than 7,000 years ago, and thus, the Oak tree for example held significance to both Celtic and Germanic speaking cultures.
