So the move is in 7 days. I’m doing the heavy packing now, which is super surreal to me. I’ve lived in this house since I was a child, so I’m super excited to move to the next chapter of my life.
Today I’m officially packing all of my clothes. I’m picking outfits for the next 7 days and then packing the rest.
Any moving tips?
Hi! I moved eight times in eight years, three of which were in the same year. Here’s my tips:
- Pack clothes in trash bags with the hangers poking out. It saves a LOT of time.
- Color code boxes with duct tape and number them 1-x per room so you know you’ve got them all after the move.
- Take fragiles in a separate box over with you when you make individual trips to the new place. They’re less likely to get broken that way.
- You’re gonna need more boxes. No more. Yeah, seriously, more. Yep. More.
- Triple-tape each box, especially if it’s heavy, on both sides. Even though you’ll constantly need more boxes, tape will be your most common run. Buy tons. And then throw a spare in the cart. And maybe another spare.
- If you’re in the US, sign up for mail forwarding through USPS. It’s $1 and will send all of your mail to your new address for a year. You can renew it each year for another $1.
- If your next place is a rental, take photos of every room – every scrape, scratch, nick, etc – before moving in. Turn the date on on your camera so the photos clearly have the date and time. Print them out and turn them into the office and keep a copy for your records. When you move out, if they try to charge you for damage already present, you’ll have proof.
- You can use clothes, wash clothes, towels and dish rags to protect your fragiles over bubble wrap. It’s also more eco friendly. 😀
- When you take something apart, put the screws/nails/etc in a ziplock and tape it to the piece/put it inside the box so you don’t lose the components.
- Put together a “day of” moving box that has things like toiletries and important overnight necessities so you’re not having to dig into several boxes right after a hard day of moving.
Aaaand I have to go to work, so that’s all for now. Good luck!
